How to Choose

Confirm the angle of incidence first, usually 45 degrees for many beamsplitter layouts. Then match the reflection and transmission bands to excitation and emission paths, and check polarization, substrate thickness, and coating side orientation.

Dichroic Mirrors

These dichroic mirrors (beamsplitters) are designed for a 45° angle of incidence and separate light by wavelength. They are suited to fluorescence microscopy, laser beam combining, multi-channel imaging, and projector applications. Longpass-type dichroics transmit longer wavelengths and reflect shorter ones.

Related Engineering Notes

Dichroic mirrors are angle-dependent

Dichroic performance changes with angle of incidence and polarization. Confirm AOI before comparing cut-on or reflection bands.

Reflection and transmission bands

A useful dichroic choice must satisfy both sides of the split: high reflection for one band and high transmission for the other.

Use in fluorescence systems

For fluorescence, match the dichroic edge to excitation and emission filters as a set, not as an isolated mirror.

FAQ

What does a dichroic mirror do?

It reflects one wavelength range and transmits another, allowing optical systems to split or combine channels by wavelength.

Why is angle of incidence important?

The transition edge shifts with angle and polarization, so the specified AOI must match the instrument design.

Can dichroic mirrors be customized?

Yes. Custom transition wavelengths, reflection/transmission bands, substrate sizes, and AOI targets can be specified.
